Student Space and GeoRox

Discover GeoRox and the spaces that bring student life and community together in UBC Geological Engineering.

UBC Geological Engineering Undergraduate Club (GeoRox)

GeoRox is a club that encompasses all Geological Engineers at UBC. GeoRox is a very active student society; we organize camping trips, industry nights, our annual On the , and many other club socials. We have the privilege of coordinating with other Engineering clubs in the EUS as well as EOAS clubs to create a diverse atmosphere for students to thrive in and provide leadership opportunities within the UBC community. GeoRox prides itself on its ability to provide great industry contacts throughout your degree as well as exciting social events.

EOSM Room 208: General Study Space and “Fish Bowl”

A large, open study area and a “fish bowl” study room for silent and focused work.

EOSM Room 202: Geological Engineering Club Room

A space where students gather to relax, socialize, and recharge between classes and labs. One of the room’s highlights is Waldo the Moose, a much-loved mascot and familiar face to generations of GEOE students.

EOSM Lab Room 127: Mineralogy Lab

This is where most GEOE students attend their first mineralogy lab. For many, it’s a nostalgic space—full of memories and hands-on learning with a wide range of rocks and minerals that make the subject come to life.

ESB masters lab

Here you can find a lot of powerful equipment, like the hydraulic press, which leaves an impression on many students exploring their options during specialization.

The Pacific Museum of Earth

Vancouver’s hidden gem and an integral part of the day-to-day experience at EOSM. It offers students and visitors access to fascinating exhibits highlighting fossils and minerals, supports learning in all contexts about fundamental science and its linkages to topics of environmental, economic, and societal importance.

CIVIL labs

The Department of Civil Engineering at UBC also hosts several labs that offer GEOE students valuable experience in soil mechanics and geotechnical testing, such as hydrometer and triaxial tests.

Our students say...

“A typical day for me combines school work and classes, but also other activities through the GeoRox club like sports, socializing and going on fields trips. Through the club, 2nd year students get the chance to hang out and work with upper year Geological Engineering students. At the end of the day, there's always room for a game of ping pong as a reward for a hard day's work. I love the sense of community created within the program by involved peers, faculty, and industry mentors."

“Our clubroom is centrally located and provides a relaxed space to study and socialize. GeoRox is also quite involved in rec sports so on any given day there will be a group of students heading to a game, from dodgeball to soccer or hockey to flag football.”
